Jeremy Burks
(B: 1979; Dayton, Ohio)
I grew up an only child in a medium-sized city in a grey, industrial part of Ohio. Most of my childhood was spent lost in my imagination, drawing constantly. My formative influences were comic books and summers spent roaming the Dayton Art Institute. In my youth, I was in turn obsessed with: mythology, historical piracy, horror and mystery novels, science fiction, and punk rock. My first real art heroes were Gee Vaucher and Winston Smith
My work is primarily representational and figurative, and generally has narrative and symbolic qualities. The subjects are usually researched, though some are pure intuition. Themes of innocence, love, betrayal, and loss are most common. I draw a great deal of inspiration from history, religion, mythology, international folk art and music, and the natural world.
I spent four years with other like-minded artists, anarchists and weirdos, and graduated with a degree in Film Production from Antioch College in 2001. I spent the following years working in various capacities in film, graphic design, and art galleries, and living in a whole bunch of places. I am currently a full-time artist and father, and reside in Austin, Texas with my incredibly-talented wife and spectacularly-naughty son.
